What Is The Prognosis For Dementia?

Unfortunately, Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive condition which causes a decline in brain function over time. The average life expectancy is quite variable, and ranges from 5 to 10 years or more. Other types of dementia may have a better prognosis.

Whilst the prognosis does appear gloomy, our knowledge of how the brain works is increasing, and our treatment strategies are broadening and becoming more sophisticated. There are often things that can be done to optimize memory in affected patients (and in the normal population), and in some cases to either delay the onset of symptoms or slow the progression of memory loss.
